I feel the need to share. (Ha! What else is new...) Today I really want to hone in on something we do constantly—and we don’t even realize we’re doing it.
We blur the line between having needs and being needy… and then boy do we ever punish ourselves for it.
I caught up with a dear girlfriend this weekend, and at one point she started talking about all these things she wanted to do- take a painting class, get outside more, ask her family to start doing their own laundry, have time alone... real, normal, healthy things.
But then she said, “I don’t want to seem needy. I feel guilty.”
And I stopped her right there.
Because needing things doesn’t make you needy.
It makes you human.
“Needy” is when you’re asking someone else to fill a hole you refuse to tend to yourself.
Having needs is recognizing what fuels you—mentally, physically, emotionally—and making space for it like it matters… because it does.
We all know the oxygen mask analogy, and yes, it’s cheesy… but it’s true. If you’re running on fumes, you’re not going to show up as your best self. You’re going to show up as tired, resentful, and one minor inconvenience away from snapping at someone who doesn’t deserve it. (Ask me how I know...)
And it’s not just the basics—food, a shower, sleep, drinking water.
It’s the bigger needs too:
Mental stimulation. Movement. Creativity. Learning. Time in nature. Getting help around the house. A goal that’s yours. Something that reminds you you’re still growing—not just surviving.
So here’s my question for you today:
What do you need right now that you keep calling “too much”?
And what would change if you stopped treating your needs like an inconvenience?
Because the moment you label yourself “needy,” you start shrinking. You start settling. You start living at half-capacity—when you were built for a full life. And it's important to realize that no one is doing this to you... you're doing it to yourself. Cutting off your own oxygen.
This week, don’t blur that line.
Name one need.
Make a plan for it.
And follow through like you’re someone worth caring for -because you are.
And if you need a little structure or support to make sure you stay on track like you mean it this time, you know I’m right here.
With love and a gentle push towards living your best life-
